I had planned to leave last week..but friends in Mainz reminded me that Fastnacht / Fäsching was underway. This is the German version of Carnival. The Fäsching season officially commences at the 11th minute of the 11th day of the 11 month of the year. Yes, folks the season started last November and continued until yesterday (Shrove Tuesday)!!! And the city of Mainz has essentially been closed since last Friday... businesses closed, no school, every hotel room booked,,, party, party, party...
